Essentials in Play Therapy: Toys, Themes and Structure

December 05 , 2015

December 5, 2015, 9-4, National University, Costa Mesa, CA

 Educational Goals:

In this workshop licensed and prelicensed therapists who are working with children will develop a greater sense of confidence in their ability to understand and utilize toys, play themes, and structural aspects of play therapy.

Toys are the words for children’s natural language of play (Association for Play Therapy). The characteristics and range of a toy collection must be intentionally created to best impact play therapy treatment. The playroom is a critical variable in play therapy and needs to provide physical and emotional safety, predictability and continuity, and a sense of security to effectively contribute to treatment.

Play themes assist the play therapist to understand what is happening in session within the context of each individual child. “Identifying and understanding the typical play themes of young children enable the family counselor to assess children’s emotional needs, family dynamics as seen through the eyes of the child, and unconscious conflicts that may be influencing the child’s current behaviors “ (Green et al., 2009 p.312). The understanding grasped through play themes helps the therapist to track progress and communicate with parents.
